The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association), in USA, has extended the ‘Dead Period’ until April 15th, 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic. This applies to all Division 1 sports, tennis included.
What is the Dead Period?
During a recruiting dead period coaches and players may not physically interact with each other. This includes at their high school, on campus, at the gym or even while grocery shopping. This is done to allow the player time to think over their choices without being influenced.
Athletes and coaches are still allowed to communicate via phone, email, social media and other digital communication channels.
For those in the US, this news affects an athlete’s plan to visit the coach, team and college before committing. But for us all the way in India, it’s an opportunity to connect virtually with coaches who are probably looking to provide D1 scholarships. Now is the time to sit and discuss with your parents and college tennis recruitment advisors about where they could target for enrollment in 2021 and beyond.
Remember, most of the thousands of tennis players who get a scholarship every year actually come from outside the USA.
